94 gt fuel pump?

So today I started my car and it fired up fine and I let it run for about 10 minutes before I left for work. Just as I was about to leave it was making this awful sound, sounded like metal rubbing against metal. So I looked under the hood and saw nothing wrong. The sound was coming from around the front right side headlight but near the alternator, somewhere in that region. It did this to me on and off a couple times before but nothing was different when I drove it. So I got in and started to go and it really really hesitated but I pushed it and figured it would let up but it didn't. I made it around the corner then it died not far from my house. The gas gauge is off so I figured it needed gas so I got over a gallon and filled it. Still wouldn't stay started. It tries to start but I don't think it's getting any gas. That battery is fine as it stays in accessory mode and cranks the engine with no problem. The few times it stayed running it only did for about 5 to 10 seconds while making that noise and just dies. I think it is the fuel pump because when I turn the key to accessory mode there is no sound like it's pulling the gas from the tank like it used to. Any help on what is wrong with it not staying running and that awful noise will be greatly appreciated.

Re: 94 gt fuel pump?

the noise you here, is it by the water pump? or the altenator? One of those could be out or getting ready to. The belt tensioner sometimes the bearing frys out. But you didnt state what engine you hav....

If you dont here the fuel pump run when you go to start, check the fuse and the relay for the fuel pump. If they look alright and no pump run, its probley the fuel pump. At least the tank isnt full, seems like I always end up with a full tank, then it goes out.

Re: 94 gt fuel pump?

Check suggested thing above first. The squealing wouldn't have been caused by your fuel pump. Could've been your drivebelt tensioner, or could be your drivebelt itself that's needing replaced. Try loosening the tension off the belt, and turn the tensioner itself and see if it's making the noise. If not, try and turn other accessories, A/C compressor, alternator, etc.

Best of luck.

The engine i have is the 2.3 quad 4 dohc ho. I can't really tell where the sound is coming from. The car won't stay running anymore. But when it did it sounded like where the serpentine belt was or timing chain area. I check the fuses for the fuel pump and all fuses are working. I'm not sure where the relay is for the fuel pump and how to check it. I really don't even know how to check all of the suggestions because i'm not much of a mechanic. Will anyone please go into any detail for me?

A novice, well I'll show you then. Now that I know what engine you hav, it very well could be the timming has jumped. Is it getting spark? You said it had tried to start but wouldnt stay running? Did it back fire or any other odd noises?

If the timming is off from the timing jumping or the belt/chain could hav broke and the only way to know is take the cover off the engine.

These engines are also known to hav the coil packs go bad, they are under the top ofthe engine cover. If the coils are original, they might need to be replaced. They can be tested here shows you how. Ignition Coil

This link has in depth directions coverd. You will find what youre looking for here about disassembly of the timing cover.
Engine Mechanical

These cover your cars fuel system.

fuel tank Assembly
Fuel Pump

Scroll down through the lists and you will find helpfull(free) diagrams & directions. their is a pic of the scrader valve where the fuel pressure can be checked. Your car might not hav one, not all quads hav them.

Some more into fuel systems.
Fuel Pressure Regulator

In the end, you still may hav to take it to a Garage to get it fixed or diag since your knowledge is limited. Good Luck Krono353

Okay well i had it taken to a garage and they said it is the fuel pump. 450 job and if the whole module is shot then the whole module itself will cost 380, they didn't specify how much THAT would be with labor. They couldn't tell me what that metal on metal sound was because it isn't running yet. I figured that it would need to go to a shop anyways so that's why i didn't get to check anything else. But hopefully the fuel pump is all that's wrong but if the module is blown too then oh well. The sending unit to the gas gauge is messed up, says there is more or less gas as i accelerate and just let it idle and goes way past the fill line when i fill the tank. And thank you for you help i do appreciate it.
