rebuilding transmission

i am toying with the idea of rebuilding my 4l60e in my 97 Z71 (350) the local shop wants $1200 if i pull it out and bring it to them... i have rebuilt a few motors a couple of rear ends (when i worked at a mechanic shop 2 yrs ago) but i never did a transmission....i just never had the chance...is it possible...or nearly impossible ?? i have seen them tore down before...the valve body...all the check balls...the front pump all the drums and clutches...in other words i have watched a few times but never tried...any advise ?? i did order a rebuild book on it which should be here in about 5 days from trans tech...thanks for any advise

Re: rebuilding transmission

You would need some special tools to change clutch pack seals at minimum, possible some bushing pullers and installers, modify the troublesome vb in the tcc bore also. Get a book and take a look at wht is involved.

Re: rebuilding transmission

I know you ordered a book but here is a DVD on rebuilding the 4L60E: http://www.technicalvideos.com/

They also rent tools for rebuilding your tranny: http://www.technicalvideos.com/tools/index.phtml

Re: rebuilding transmission

Like maxwedge says you WILL need special tools a book should also be a must. A transgo shift kit should also be installed that will give you CB locations along with some pics of the valve train on some valves. It will also include the tcc valve so your VB is salvageable. I rebuilt a 4T60E ( I know you have a 4L60E) for my self not much damage and it still cost me $400 for parts at the shops cost. so after you pay retail for parts and tools it wont be that much difference
