Starts..runs for 1 sec...dies...repeats????
I have a 98 chevrolet 1/2 ton extended cab 4x4 with 5.7 liter. Sometimes it starts and runs just fine other times it will start run for a second then die. It will do this very intermittently and sometimes it will run for weeks without a hitch. I have noticed the security light coming on once in a while and have read some references to this being a problem. One web site said there is a way to bypass the security light by replacing it with a 577 oHm resistor. Anyone have any ideas?
Let me know if you need any more information. Thanks, Kevin |

Check your fuel pressure at the intake manifold. When my pump went out it had a similar symptom. Motor needs somewhere around 60-62 PSI to start, 50's to run

Re: Starts..runs for 1 sec...dies...repeats????
There were problems with the security systems on these models also. If the problems after the doors have been locked with the remote. There is a fuse in the interior fuse box that disables the security sytem, I think with the fuse removed it will start and then replace the fuse. I hope this info is correct its been a while since I encountered this problem. A GM tech should be able to give a better repair is a common problem. Good luck with the repair.

It sounds like passlock is having a problem as others have stated. But don't go putting a resistor as you read it will not work. The resistance is different from truck to truck and that being the right one for your truck is not very likely. The passlock is can be by-passed by removing the column shroud and adding the resistor there you will need a good digital volt meter to find out what resistance your truck has. If this is not your kind of thing go find a local car audio shop not best buy or chain store like that but a local store and ask one of their installers if they can do it for you it will take a fifteen cent resistor and about ten minutes to do so twenty bucks should be more than enough to pay them. If they don't know what you are talking about find someone else this should be a no brainier for someone that has any experience. If you want to do it yourself let me know and i will give you exact instructions. In rare cases there could be something wrong with the security/body control/or ecm modules but with this bypass done it should go away don't wait to long or you may get stuck some were then it will cost you even more.

Key is perhaps worn out, replace key, from a locksmith. Problem solved. Less than 20.00 and you won't worry about someone stealing your truck....
