Guy's I know this is the Blazer forum, but you guys know what your talking about...

I have a 1997 Mustang GT 5-speed with 40k miles, after i start the car, it makes this awful clanking/ticking noise for like 2 seconds then stops and idles/runs great, there is only 40k miles on it. It will stop doing this when the car is fully warmed up. It started doing this one morning while in an angry mood, i had just started the car and did a small burnout, ever since then it has made this noise after it starts. to me the noise sounds like its coming from inside the engine...Any ideas guys?

Well the biggest problem you have is it's a Ford

However, Have a buddy start the engine cold with you under the hood. My guess would be that you have a accessory making some noise. Was this one of those 5,000rpm for 500 ft burnouts? My buddies old 90 GT did some awesome ones.

Sounds like you are using a Fram oil filter which is allowing the oil to drain back into the oil pan and therefore causing you dry starts.

What oil and filter do you use?

Motorcraft, Wix, Mobil1 are all good oil filters.

Hopefully you are using the proper 5w30 or 10w30 for your car.

That was the first thing that came to mind, while I was reading it.

thanks man, that sounds like a possibility too, but it sounds like its coming from the inside of the back of the engine near the fire wall

That clanking is no oil/oil pressure in your engine. It takes a couple of seconds for oil to get through the engine. Like everyone said, what oil filter are you using, and what oil are you using...?

possable starter bind

if it is your starter the sound may come from near the fire wall the problum with ths is when you did your burnout you may have shifted your engine and transmishion slitly causing the starter to bind slitly on the flywheel if this is the case i would check the bellhousing bolts to make shure thay are touqad to specks if thay arnt thin you may have a real problum i have had this happen before on a different car was your transmithion replaced resently. if it were a dodge or chevy i would sugest a missing shim unfoutunatly ford at least the ones i owned dident use shimes if you decide to check the bell housing i would check the bolt holes for egg shaping but if its only shifted once that may not be a problum relining the engine and trans and re toqing the bolts should fix the problum.

Another question, has the car been doing this recently(like last oil change), or has it been doing it longer than that?
