Fuel Pump, ASD and Fuel pump Relay

Vehical Info: 1998 Dodge Caravan, 3.3 Flex Fuel. 106000 miles.

I'm pretty sure I have a bad fuel pump but I'm looking to see if anyone else out there might have a different opinion.

Wife took the teenagers to school this morning. Came home complaining that the van stalled out on her 4 times. I checked it. Van starts but immediately or almost immediately stalls out. When I turn the key I can here the fuel pump whuring but it is erratic. I can also hear both the Auto Shutoff Relay and the fuel pump relay clicking away.

I pulled the Auto Shutoff Relay off and turned the ignition to ON, the Fuel pump kicks in, then off, then on, and I can hear the Fuel Pump relay clicking in sync with the fuel pump.

My conclusion is either a flakey connection at the fuel pump, a frayed/shorted wire or a Bad Fuel Pump.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Not looking forward to dropping the fuel tank to do this or shelling out $180 for a fuel pump.

Thanks in advance.

Bruce

I have a 2000, same engine. At about 100,000 I changed my fuel pump and water pump as a time change. I do a lot of driving in the boonies, did not want to get stranded with a bad pump. On 2 other cars I have had fuel pumps quit around 100k. In my opinion, don't feel too cheated if you have to change one at this mileage.

Re: Fuel Pump, ASD and Fuel pump Relay

There are a couple of possibilities before I would drop the tank and change the fuel pump. First, change the fuel pump relay. If it is bad it will cause the same problems you indicated. Second, if the fuel filter has not been changed recently you may have a blocked filter that is causing these issues. If both of these do not resolve the issue then the fuel pump will probably need to be changed as you said. The above items are a lot cheaper than the fuel pump and a lot easier to change. Besides you should change them when you put in a new pump anyway.
