wiping the rain away

So i think this is a standard problem, but the other day my 98 blazer's windshield wipers stopped working. I drove to a store with the wipers on and everything was fine, when i returned from the store i could not get the wipers to turn back on. So i set the switch to on and went out in the rain to gently pulled on the wiper blade - all the sudden everything started to work fine again. Any idea's on if this is the motor going back, or some other electrical part? My back wiper already stopped working but i dont care too much about that as i need the front to see.

Sounds like the motors are bad. I am not 100% sure but it is the most likely answer to your problem.

Re: wiping the rain away

Most wiper problems are a result of broken solder connections on the pulse board, usually resoldering them fixes the problem.

a lady at my work said they replaced some chip on her's, or at least thats what they told her. Where might this pulse board be, because i could solder this thing no problem.

Re: wiping the rain away

sounds like the wiper motor has a dead spot it is hanging up on.

Re: wiping the rain away

Hey thanks for the link. But the soldering problem kind of confuses me. I dont see how the wipers could have been working before and then all the suddened stopped. I can see if the rain was shorting it out or something but the fact that i pulled on the windsheild wiper to get them going again almost makes it seem more like the motor is going bad or got stuck.

The pulse board is a known problem. Chevy had a recall but it only covered up to 1997models. Mine is also a 98. My symptoms, same as yours, plus in intermitent(slow) mode, they would speed up to full on their own, or just stop. Bought a module from ebay under $20, took maybe 15mins to replace. When I replaced mine, saw a couple of bad solders/burnt spots.

Re: wiping the rain away

Have dealer run your vin no for the recall on the wiper module board. You might get luckie.
If not pull the front cover off and undo wiring plug in and pull the board out. Look at the board where the wiring plug goes into board and you will see a crack in the solder joint . Drop a drop of solder on it.
And it is fixed.
Or you can replace the module. If you wish.

Re: wiping the rain away

Thanks all. When i got home i took a peek at where the board is everyone is talking about. The more i thought about it the more it might be just the board. Sometimes when i leave my car out of the garage ive noticed my intermitent mode just keeps going and doesnt stop like aleekat said. Any yesterday maybe it was raining so light that it just cause a problem due to very little moister like the morning dew. Ill take a look later this week and get the solder iron ready.

Had this problem on my '98. The cracked solder joints are intermittent connections... sometimes they conduct well enough that the wipers work, sometimes the resistance is so high that they don't. Fixing the joints with fresh solder is super easy though.

Re: wiping the rain away

well i checked out the pulse board this past weekend and did not see anything wrong as far as soldering is concerned with it. So i closed it all back up with a bit of silicone caulk to help keep the moister out, if that was part of the problem.

Re: wiping the rain away

Has the problem come back?

I would lube all hinges in the wiper assembly.

Re: wiping the rain away

well the problem did come back. Today it was horrible. I would set the wipers to hi, and nothing, then about 2 mins later they were flying across the windshield. Then sometimes stop again. Does everyone think this is still the pulse board?
