rough idle and stall
Hello everyone,
I have a 1992 Olds 88 Royale with the 3800 series engine and it idles rough and died on me after going down the road just a couple of miles. Then it wouldnt start back up for quite some time. I changed the fuel filter and plugs first. Still ran rough. Then I checked for spark at the coil packs. Good spark on four plugs but bad spark on two. When I pulled the wires on those two posts there was less spark popping around then the other four and the car didn't idle any worse then when the wire was attached to the post. I replaced those two wires and that made no difference. I replaced the coil pack and that didn't help either. Could it be the module below the coil pack or some kind of sensor? I appreciate any advise and I hope I made this message clear enough to understand. Thanks, Garrison |

Your explanation/description should be a model for questions asked in this forum in general, any way you have all but eliminated everything but the module. problem is with it's seemingly partial operation it is hard to be sure. Check the grounds to the engine and chassis, make sure the connector to the module is clean and tight, look for any frayed wires or connector pulled out in that icm harness. An erratic/ weak signal from the crank sensor has been known to cause this, but without a scope it is impossible to check the 3x vs 18x signal.

Welcome to AF!
Several items can cause you issue. First, the ignition module under the coils can cause this. Second, the crank position sensor can be going bad and failing to send the proper signal, third the cam position sensor can cause similar issues as the crank position sensor. Finally, the engine control module can cause this problem but start with the other items first as they are cheaper to replace. |

check your hoses.... you could have a vaccuum leak somewhere.

If you havent yet figured out your problem you can take off your ignition module (piece under the coil packs) its held in by 3 nuts and autozone can test it for free. So before you just start replacing everything try that first
