How to replace a starter...

Wow, this was a pain in the ass. I might as well do a somewhat detailed write up on it. Took me about 4 hours due to lift problems and me being retarded.

Well first thing is first, if you get a rebuilt starter, test it. Connect a battery and jump the positive cable to the solenoid using a wire or something to make sure it works.

Next thing, take off the drivers side front wheel and proceed to disconnect the tie rod, ball joints and rest of the suspension. The ball joints are 22 mm and I forgot the others. Youll also need to take off the axle nut, which is about 1 1/2 or 32mm, somewhere around there, I used 1 1/2 and it worked fine.

Assuming you have access to a lift( to make things easier), take a couple of flat head screw drivers and pry the part where the axle goes into the transmission, it should pop right out easy. It has a slip ring on it so putting it back in, you just have to pop it in.

Lower the car back down and take out the battery, upper intercooler pipe, and the 2 starter bolts which are 14mm each. You can do this first if you want, makes sense to, I didnt(retarded me).

Next youll have to fiddle with the starter to get it out, make sure to disconnect the wires going to it. Plug in the wires to the new one, have a friend hold it up while u put the screws in. Tighten it back up and prest-o change-o, you have a new starter.

This is also a good time to change your tranny fluid since a good amount leaked out. 75w90 gear lube works great

Enjoy all

Re: How to replace a starter...

Forgot to add, if anyone ever gets a metal scraping noise when you start your car, the bearings are going bad and it would be wise to replace. But it wont hurt the car just for the fact its bearings, you wont rip teeth off your flywheel or anything of the sort

Re: How to replace a starter...

Sounds like fun. I just dropped my car off at the dealership to have the starter replaced...for the 3rd time in 2 years. As long as they keep going bad within 12 months/12,000 miles, I'll be set.

Re: How to replace a starter...

why did you need to pull the suspension apart? never looked at a 2g too close but on a 1g its just 2 bolts that go in from the back of the starter. pull the battery and uicp then unbolt the starter and slip it out.

Re: How to replace a starter...

I replaced a starter on my buddies 95 GST. I didn't have to remove any of the suspension. Weird???

Re: How to replace a starter...

The only thing I remove is the UICP. And battery if its still in the engine bay. It's been a long time since I've had to do it on a mostly stock setup though, so the cruise control and other BS may make it a pain in the ass.

Re: How to replace a starter...

I could barely reach it from removing the UICP, it was easier to get it from underneath neways, there werent any coolant hoses in the way.

Re: How to replace a starter...

Yeah I can't see a reason why you had to remove ANY of the suspension either?
