Thumbs down '98 Durango headlight problems

#*X@$! I can't get my thread to post! I'll try one more time.

I'm trying to find out why my Durango headlights keep shutting down a few minutes after turning on. If you turn the switch off, wait a few minutes and turn back on, they come on but then go back off in a few minutes. Sometime they blink off and on, other times just go off, and will not come back on until waiting a few minutes, then will come back on after using the switch, off then on. Wierd and I's sick of it. Is this a gremlin or a switch? At what cost is a new switch installed?
2/22/06 update: Thanks for the response guys. The problem was a switch, quoted price $120 installed, actual price due to shipping the darn thing from Timbuktoo was $150.00

Angry Re: '98 Durango headlight problems

I too am experiencing the same problems. 1998 models have a separate pull switch/twist dimmer for the headlights and a square push button located to the left of the switch for the fog lights. After driving for 20 or so minutes the headlights go out (either on high or low beam) and then will come back on. The driving lights are OK. This is weather you have the fog lights on or not. If you have the headlights on 'high' with the fog light switch engaged, the fog lights are bi-passed. But if the 'high' beams go out, the fogs come back on again. The local dodge dealer does not know of a recall, but it is strange that in 1999 the lighting switch was changed to a twist/pull system with a separate dimmer.

I too hope that someone responds to this as the '98 h/lamp switch is $108.00.!!!

Sounds like something is heat sensitive or maybe the connector on the light switch is loose or burned? Try your local auto parts stores for a new switch or www.makeitmopar.com for 25% off dealer list. I think I would also file a safety complaint at www.nhtsa.com

Why did you buy a $40K vehicle and not a $100 Factory Service Manual?

Might be the headlight circuit breaker.
