My 1999 Grand Cherokee Laredo recently started making a loud metal on metal grinding noise. It started after my wife stopped at a red-light and started going again once it hit green, the only other noises it previously made was a light "rattle" at low speeds. I've changed the brake pads a few months ago but nothing was wrong with the calipers or rotors so I didn't mess with them. The grind doesn't happen in idle, only when the vehicle is moving, regardless of speed. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

The grinding noise is a typical jeep noise, mine does the same thing! I hate it! The problem is usually the pinion bearing in the rearend, its $70 for all the parts and about 3 hours labor, I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself unless you have some very extensive micrometers

Re: Grinding Noise while Driving
If it is 4X4 you may want to check the CV-joint in front driveshaft. Check if it has the rubber protecting the bearing. If it is not there, you need to inspect it and maybe replace it. I found that to be my problem.

Re: Re: Grinding Noise while Driving
If the sound is constant, only when moving and if you shift briefly into neutral and still there, it may be your wheel bearings, see my previous thread.
