Unhappy When turning engine stalls.

Today as I was turning left at an intersection when the engine in my 1999 Windstar SEL lost power, all the “idiot” lights came on, as well difficult to turn. About five miles later I was turning right at an intersection it did the same thing. I lost power. On both occasions, the turn that I was making was a normal turn into an intersection using my blinker, before the turns I braked to diminish the speed as to not upset the kids. (Flying from one side to the other, although they were seatbelts.) I keep up the maintenance on this vehicle, by taking it to the dealer. It has 81000 miles on the 3.8 engine. And yes I have had to replace the tranny on it at 28,000, under warranty.

This is our family vehicle; my wife drives it 98 percent of the time with the most important things in my life, my kids.

I’m not bragging, I just trying to make a point. I can bench press 450 lbs ten times, and curl 90 lbs for each arm. Let me tell you when the power when out on the van the second time. It took every once of strength I had to keep the van from crossing over to oncoming traffic, and I almost did not make it. Can someone give me some advice? That is, before I take it to the dealer. I do not want this to happen while my wife is driving it. Thanks for your time.

Semper Fi.

Re: When turning engine stalls.

The lost of power you describe is electrical in nature. (A lost of fuel would cause the same symptoms ... except for the "idiot lights" etc).

There are several things that may be going on:
1. The system voltage may be dropping when the engine gets low in rpm during turns ... faulty battery, loose/coroded cables, etc.
2. Worn PCM relay sensitive to low voltage.
3. Breakdowns in the drivetrain harness ... the '99 is famous for chaffing of the harness with the ac tubing on the firewall.
4. ???
