1999 Mazda Protege Transmission O/D problems

Our 1999 Protégé does a strange thing - sometimes the overdrive light comes on and it won't shift from 1st or it shifts rough. You can turn it off, then turn it back on and the overdrive light goes off and it runs fine. Can you tell me what might cause this?

you need a trans.... if you are looking for a direct component failure... it sounds like a shift solenoid sticking. take to your local mazda dealer for a complete diagnosis... not a trans shop

So if it is the shift solenoid then we probably can remove the trans pan and replace it ourselves?
