Engine light

2000 Jeep Wrangler
I was recently driving for about 45 minutes at 70mph. on cruise control. When the speed limit dropped I turned off the cruise and began slowing down. Immediately when I turned off the cruise the engine light came on. Does anyone know why? Also, can I turn the light off or does the dealer have to hook it up to reset the fault? At least then I could wait to see if it comes on again?

Just disconnect the neg cable of the battery and leave it off for about 20 seconds. that will reset the computer. Otherwise you can go to Autozone and they'll check the codes free of charge.

My Chiltons says

My Chilton's says any year after 95 do not disconect cable to reset. It says it has to be done with a scanner. I would make sure to get the engine light code and see what the problem is, I would not suggest disconnecting the battery cable to reset.

Re: My Chiltons says

I have a 2003 Ruby. I have had my battery go dead several times (due to leaving lights on as I removed a fuse for the interior lights for when I had the doors off, which also disables alarms for lights on)

When the battery went dead it basically does the same thing as removing the battery cables. Everything resets. I never had any probs and it has happened to me about 6 times.

Disconnecting the battery will reset the computer. So what if it has to learn the timing and fuel map again? It won't hurt anything. I know my 1995 has OBD 1, but it also runs funny after I disconnect my battery. I actually get better fuel mileage.
