Start up is sounding harsh... (2000 2.2L)

It makes a somewhat loud clunk noise every time you start it. I mean... it never has problems starting, its just a very unpleasent sound that it didnt use to make.

Has anyone else had this problem and do you know how to fix it?

I haven't experienced the problem but you could have a bad motor mount, transmission mount or an exhaust that is hitting when the engine turns over. Have these items checked out and you should find the problem.

Make sure you don't have anything loose inside the engine compartment as well. If it makes that noise every single time, you may need to just tighten something or put something back where it needs to go.

I just bought a 99 sunfire 2.2L with the same problem. It sounds like three consitance knocks and it maybe coming from the dash or firewall area. I will have to check the mounts and maybe the speedometer cable.

Well I got a little time to check it out today and the only thing I found was the mounts might be warn. I can place my hand on top of the motor and without much force move it back and forth. Can someone tell me if they can do the same so I will know for sure that they need to be replaced.
