Question Does the transmission "learn" my driving style?

I am a newbie to Ford vehicles (was an OLDS diehard), but am thrilled with my 2003 MGM LS Ultimate Edition!

I believe my 93 Olds LSS used to "learn" my driving style. If, for some reason, the power was removed from the car e.g. a dead battery, the transmission would lose its settings & learn them anew from the way I drive - either that or I imagined it, but it certainly seemed as though it altered it's change points after a while to suit my light footed style.

So, my question is, does this work the same way on a MGM? If so, is there a way of resetting the transmission so that it can relearn how I drive without disconnecting the battery, or will disconnecting the battery not work on a MGM?

Thanks,
Nick.

The way it was explained to me when my PCM got fried was that if the PCM is flashed (basically reprogrammed) it will re learn your driving habits and react accordingly. I don't believe disconnecting the battery will do the trick. I think a trip to the dealer is needed.

unplug your negative battery terminal for 30-45 minutes.

this should reset everything to factory fresh. if your clock is not reset to 12 am, it needs longer with the battery not connected.

once it is reset, drive as you would normaly and yes, it will learn your driving style.

i would not suggest driving like a banshee... your gas mileage will suffer significantly.

it will take a little while to be 100%. i think it takes about 100miles of driving to be done.

Jon - could this be a reason for trans-issues of the trans they interchange with the 4.6 - i.e the late shifting, a shudder when shifting up???

if you get a 'shudder'(like driving over the rumble strips on the side of the road) you need to do a full tranny service. replace all the fluid, new filter and fill with mercon V.

when you reconnect the battery, start the car, let it idle without touching the gas. Just park it and let it run for 5 minutes. The computer recalibrates everything during this time. If you don't, your cars gas miliage and drivability will suffer during the next 500 miles
