You may want to check the Idle Air Control Valve. It costs about $70 to replace and when it starts to go bad, will not allow the vehicle to idle well (if at all) until it is warmed up (and will even idle very low when warm). This valve will not keep the engine from starting but WILL keep it from idling. It seems to be a problem on Ford engines as I have had to replace one on my 95 Taurus and 99 Mountaineer. Hope this helps.
