I bet you had a better day than I had.

You ever walk thruogh a junkyard & think 'Man, WTF happened to that car?'. Well, here's my tale. (pics somehow ended up black & white):

Accident happened on the highway on Thurs. 27th. Believe it or not I was driving from Ottawa to Boston, Mass. to catch a plane to Japan on Tuesday!!! I was distracted by something on the passenger seat for a moment, glanced up & was on track, glanced down again & when I looked up realised at least two of my wheels were in the gravel. I tried to steer back on the road but the car started to skid & I think clipped the rear quarter, then spun across the highway smacking front first into the opposite guardrail before spinning some more. Don't ask me the exact details, it happened in about .05 second.

I wasn't even speeding, just tooling along at 100KPH (55MPH roughly) & have driven hundreds of thousands of miles so I just can't believe it happened. I walked away without an injury other than a bit of a bump where my head hit the headrest & a slight stiff neck. The drivers side seat is a bit broken so must have taken most of the impact. I was also lucky that I didn't hit another car, despite there being quite a bit of traffic on the road. The car didn't flip (like I bet an SUV would have) & I wasn't hurt, I wouldn't want to hit a truck in a Civic, but it I can vouch (the hard way) that they are a pretty safe car in a crash now.

Police were friendly enough, but just before leaving gave me a ticket & said that they could have issued a 'careless driving', but instead left it at 'failure to drive in the correct lane' - $110!!! Fuck, like that's all I need! I contact insurance & they assured me that they'd pay for damages... TO THE GUARDRAIL! But that since it was counted as 'driver error', that they weren't going to pay another red cent.

So I had it towed home, ripped out the stereo & anything else easily stolen, put a car cover on it & will leave it til I get back. Oh, that will be in December, when it will be way to cold to do a damn thing too. Maybe the frame is still straight & I can replace the front sheetmetal, radiator etc, but I'm thinking I might sell the good stuff & wreck it. Fuck, the grief this car has caused me!

Now I gotta run to catch the shitty Greyhound, take care all. I'm just going to enjoy my goddamn vacation & worry about this later.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Glad that you've walked away without injuries though. Consider yourself lucky. The car is probably not worth rebuilding, so I'd start looking for another one.

Sorry to hear that man. At least you're allright. That sucks about the insurance comp. So the insurance company is not paying for damges to your car? Don't let this get in way of your vacation. Try not to think about it. Good luck. Hope everything works out.

Re: I bet you had a better day than I'm had.

Glad to hear you're ok and hope you have a good vacation despite this. I agree, probably best to get a different car but hang on to your si till after you buy just in case you come across a clean standard or DX or sedan so if you want you can swap in the Si drivetrain. Just a suggestion. GL

Yeah, she was pretty clean cso I had some major rust repair work within the last 6 months. And thanks guys, I agree that it could have been a lot worse than walking away from it, especially at highway speeds.

I've been wondering about the crash & thinking I can get insurance to pay up. When I hit the brakes (I'm guessing) & tried to steer to go back on the road, that's when the car started to skid. Maybe I did wrench the steering wheel & that caused the crash, but more likely rear brakes locked up before the front, in effect like throwing on the handbrake. Why else would the extreme right corner hit first, when there was only the 2 right hand wheels in the gravel? It must have been because the rear end was thrown sideways.

If I can convince insurance to check the front discs & they're glazed or not working right for whatever reason, I should get cash to get another car. Either way, the Si parts are coming off & as much usable as I can get off it (doors, rear hatch too etc).

Re: I bet you had a better day than I'm had.

man that sux, had something almost like that happen to me the same freakin day, was lookin down and glanced to get a map and hurd the bumps on the side of the road to warn you that your going off the road looked up and sure enough i was going off the road straightend out and kept it on the road since. was a rental toraus so it wouldnt have been too bad if i did since it wouldnt have been my crx. Shit happens... enjoy your vacation in Japan and get a nice message with a happy ending that should help you forget about it.
