Noob Muffler Question

Yes, I know many have asked about this question, but here it goes again. I am looking for a new muffler for my 01 z24 cavalier. I dont have the moneny for a full cat back system, wish i did. So i decided just to get a muffler, for the sound and the little boost and the little better fuel ecomony. I looked on ebay and saw this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/APEXI...10573506QQrdZ1 . I then went to my local custom shop and looked at their muffler and they look exactly the same and they are made up of the same metal. At the custom shop they are 70 bucks and this one is like 36 with shipping. Is there any difference? Does the sound differ?

Any input could help

thanks

Eric

Re: Noob Muffler Question

It may be the same quality. The eBay version may also be a cheap knock off with inferior quality. The muffler shop is going to have a higher markup then an eBay store as the brick and morter shop has higher expenses. Same reason why you can find cheaper computer gear online then at Best Buy. The muffer shop's price may also include labor (or a reduced labor rate). Be sure to compare apples to apples and not oranges to kumquats.

And don't buy a muffler for the "little boost and the little better fuel ecomony". Adding this muffler to a otherwise stock exhuast system will do nothing for boost or fuel economy.

Re: Noob Muffler Question

I'd be extremly careful when buying things like this off ebay. ALot of them contain Louvers on the inside which they don't show in their pictures. The are little obstructions that are in the center of the pipe to cut down on noise, but a high quality muffler will not need them do to the amount of sound absorbing material that the quality companies use. Thats why i will never buy somthing like that off ebay.

Re: Noob Muffler Question

Yea i would do like CRJ and cdru said. You cant expect to pay for a muffler like that and it make the same exact sound or have the same exact quality.

While this is somewhat true it's also false, most stock mufflers do cause back-pressure. Ever see an old-ass honda with a 1inch stock exhaust pipe? Tell me that doesn't create a shit load of back-pressure. Now while the improvement may not be noticeable due to the cat, there is a reduction of back-pressure. I could tell a slight improvement in performance when I cut off my stock muffler for a glasspack (bad sound, really nasty). The muffler I have now is made by Naxos, it's a one peice straight-through muffler & 7" tip, oval shape. Awesome, deep sound, I love it! Those fart-cans you hear about are round and barely bigger than the pipe itself, so you get a nasty, loud, tinny "fart" sound. Get an oval shaped muffler if you want a deep throaty sound.

Re: Noob Muffler Question

I have the fireball (?) muffler on my 2000 Cavy. It sounds so nice. 4 inch outlet. Its fairly loud as well. I refer to it as a fart can. But I like it.

Re: Noob Muffler Question

This is what our shop does muffler/exhaust wise...

Stainless steel cat-back all inside and out custom welds. This is on my buddy Dann's Z24 its 2.5" for a nitrous setup. The muffler is a Dynomaxx Turbo 2. Very nice sounding exhaust. We just got the lift after this install on Dann exhaust.

My team mate chris's Sunfire with the same muffler but intended for a camaro.

Nuff said.....

Hey thanks for the info guys. I just save up a little longer and get one from the shop. Although like buying computer parts, I have built many many computers from internet and have way better results from parts from best buy. But there is a risk in everything. thanks for all the info.

also... has anyone bought a ebay muffler? did you have any problems?

Re: Noob Muffler Question

Ebay muffler right here. Well, on my car anyways. I have no problems with it. And supposedly I can be heard coming about 4 blocks away with it. I dont beleive it. But my g/f and all my friends say it. So until I let someone take my car and drive down the road/street and I stand and listen. I won't beleive it.

I'm not saying that it wouldn't create back pressure. What I was getting at is that on a stock vehicle, putting a "high flow" muffler would likely do nothing to gas milage. The system breaths decent as is so as long as the currently installed muffler isn't plugged, it probably won't breath any easier. The cat probably is the most restrictive part of the exhaust system, especially if the vehicle has high milage and hasn't been taken the best of care.

Re: Noob Muffler Question

I get shitty gas mileage on my car. Maybe it has something to do with my WAI. I am not sure what the problem is. I also have a Magnaflow Hi-Flow cat. Help!

Allthough I do like the sound of my exhuast.

Re: Noob Muffler Question

^^ Quit testing your engines Vaccum performance. Hearing the roar out of your intake is cool and fun, buts not when its time to keep filling her up all the time.

... lol...

Might need a tune up or a fuel system cleaning.
