My daughters 1999 Cavalier wont start. I replaced the fuel filter. The spark plugs, after cranking are not wet, but are black. I don't know where the fuel pump is. Is it in the tank or is it the rectangular box type thing behind the fuel tank between the rear wheels? How do I test the fuel pump?

When you turn the key to the "on" position, not start, you should hear the pump prime for approx. 5 seconds. I don't have a manual handy, but on my Blazer, there's a fuel pump test wire under the hood. It's a red wire that I can run a 12v jumper to, to test the pump. |

Some years had a schrader valve on the fuel rail or another easily location. Other years you have to cut a fuel line to install a T fitting going to the pressure gauge.
