Knocking

HELP - I have an annoying knock in what sounds like the valve/lifters that I can't get rid of. This is a 1996 V-6 3.2L Rodeo. I've tried Rislone but doesn't help. Motor has 135k on it. Any suggestions?

Re: Knocking

search for tick here. there is a ton of info on it.

also, it could be your timing belt tensor on the outs (should be changed everytime you do the timing belt).

The lifter tick in these engines is common and most people just put up with it. If I get some extra cash I might tear it down and see exactly what is wrong. My tick comes and goes and engine flush and various oils don't help. The only thing I do to minimize the noise is to change the oil every 3k miles. It always seems to make the most noise when its due for an oil change.

Does it knock at idle? is it a sharp knock? Have you run the engine low on oil? Worst case, it could be a spun rod bearing, could also be one of your pistons slamming up against the head, if this is the case, you need a engine rebuild or a new engine.

nothing like throwing someone into a panic.... hehe

most likely it's the "natural" sound of this engine, as many of us here have the sound. just keep the oil changed, you shouldn't have a problem
