Heater Core/Radiator NIGHTMARE !!! DEX COOL !!!

Over the past weekend, our 2001 Impala began leaking a foul and filthy liquid inside the vehicle passenger floor area, which seemed to be coming from somewhere under the hood and running through the panel and dash board. We took in to a mechanic and he confirmed that the Dex-Cool in the radiator went sour and muddy, passing through the heater core, cracking the hoses, which then leaked inside the vehicle leaving muddy puddles (and swampy-like odors). They confirmed that it's a huge problem with Chevy's patented Dex-Cool radiator fluid. There's currently a lawsuit against Chevy, which they claim that Dex-Cool should last up to 150k miles, but our Impala only had 50k miles. The mechanic (who use to work for Chevy directly) suggests that the radiator fluid (Dex-Cool) should be replaced about every year. After $600, the heater core was replaced, radiator and hoses flushed to remove the mud and refilled with new fluid. This is the worst case I've ever seen with any vehicle ever, and probably will be the last Chevy I ever own. I doubt we'll ever get reimbursed from this lawsuit against them.

Re: Heater Core/Radiator NIGHTMARE !!! DEX COOL !!!

Do a search for Dexcool class action and get your name on the list. Probably just make a rich lawyer richer but you'll get some satisfaction from it anyway. One critical thing about Dexcool is to have a tight system, and the factory radiator cap is a weak link, along with the intake manifold gaskets that leak. Keep a very close watch on your coolant level and condition for a few months now, these problems often don't go away even with the work you've had done. I just can't believe the largest auto maker in the world can't build a car with a trouble free cooling system, not like it's something brand new.
