90 Cutlass Calais Starts And Then Turns Off.
1990 Cutlass Calais. When I start it up it turns on right away but it only stays on for about 3 or 4 seconds. It starts up every time but turns off each time. I had a friend who knows a little about cars look at it and he said it may be the fuel filter. I changed the filter but it still doesnt stay on, the filter did need changing because I tried to run water through the old filter and it only dripped out of the other side. The fuel filter is the only thing I tried so far. When I first got this problem I was driving down the street and I heard my exhaust pipe dragging on the ground so I pulled over to tie it up. I tried to tie it up witha string just until I got home. After I put the string on I started the car back up and drove for about a mile then it burned though the string and made the exhaust pipe drag again so I pulled over again and tied it up with an extention cord this time, then I got back in the car and tried to start it up again and it came on and then turned right off. That was the first time it happened. I wonder if it has something to do with the exhaust pipe. I lost the muffler and half of my exhaust a long time ago due to rust. What could cause it to turn off since it comes on every time?
