TCC Solenoid!
I'm not that familar with a 96, but on the earlier models with auto transmission, they have a tcc solenoid in the tranny that allows the car to shift into overdrive. When this solenoid becomes defective, the car will start but stall in gear. My 89 Z24 does this occassionally, but not always. You can jack the car up and disconnect the wires going to this solenoid and see if it still dies. If the car runs ok, then you need to replace the tcc. If this does work, don't leave the solenoid disconnected, as your gas mileage will turn to crap. If this doesn't do the trick, then I would check for a bad neutral safety switch. The solenoid cost is about $40 at your local parts store. There is a post on this from another site and I will see if I can locate for you.
