Need Info on V8 swap

*The long version:

My second car, pride and joy is a stock black 92 fastback. Yes it's absolutely stock. It's also the car that got me addicted with 5 speeds/any manual transmissions. Just this summer I was looking for a newer, faster, real live sports car!!, ...........but I couldn't wait so I bought an 87 Iroc-Z with the 305 auto, a lot cheaper than I bought the 240sx for. It took me a while to realize, the camaro was HUGE. Same wheelbase as the nissan but wider, longer, and tons heavier. The interior isn't much to look at either. It's a very good project car but I'm finding too many holes in it so I considered using it as a donor car. I'm still looking at my options, I like the idea of a mid engine v8 mr2, handles better, or a 4 door like an impala. Then I turned my head, THE NISSAN. It's currently my daily driver but I should be free of school during the festive winter months.

*The short version:
Where can I find information and ideas about swapping in a chevy small block into a 240sx fastback?

And if someone on here has done it, do you prefer the LT1 series? I might be able to save money if I use the 305 tpi. Thanks a lot

Re: Need Info on V8 swap

Alright, I read the fight between SR20DETPower and F-- i can't remember it was slideways and....the guy with an s14. I'm not here to start a war, I just like american engines and I love my nissan, the interior, the lightweight frame, and it's sad but the Camaro's power window motor runs slower than my arm. I didn't even say I would definitely do it but here's the reason, I haphazardly bought the camaro, I've learned to work on cars with it and realized I didn't want it as much as I thought I did. I may still change my mind but the fact is I have a 240sx and a Camaro, both engines suck(timings chain and dirty engine) Can you tell I've put a lot of thought into this? I haven't really, this is the beginning!!!

I thought it would be easier to balance the weight with an MR base and the fiero's too small, the mr2 looked prime for it. And I'm not sure how you balance the weight on a 240sx at all so that's why I'm asking.

Re: Need Info on V8 swap

nonononono id say do the 240 if anything. mr2 and youll find out the definition of "snap oversteer" the hard way
people say the RB swap doesnt upset the balance too bad and the 305 cant be too much heavier

btw the 240 fastback is something like 55/45 front/rear weight stock (might be even better than that) so even adding 50-100lbs to the nose wont hur that bad. just get a silvia front end with CF fenders, hood, ect. and youll take that 50lbs back off.

So I wouldn't have to add weight to the back, nice. I'll have to look into that. I like drifting and all but i'm not making a drift car, or a drag car, just a really good DD.

Another advantage over the Iroc-Z would be that my nissan is less of a cop target, even being black. I always thought that was interesting.

A 305 belongs in the trash along with KA24E's.

At least put a real V8 in the car, and not some puny motor that has it's mincy nuts in the emissions vice.

Oh and I forsee alot of understeer in your future.

And normally I'd agree with you elitist, but this time I onl;y half agree with you. I will drop in a better v8 if it turns out that the 305 is unsalvageable, because It's been dying slowly over the years.

However, If I can get the 305 up and running, I'm cleaning it out, adding new cams, balancing it, doing whatever I can to increase it's driveability.

Okay there's a third option, if all of that shit putting into a 305 costs too much money, then I'll go buy a crate engine or a good used one. Is there a site where someone has done this swap or sells parts for it? All I've found are a lot of datsun swaps, 3rd gen rx7s and one selling ad for an 89 with a 350 in it, but no picture. I think there's something on silvia.net, going to check it out!

5 liters can still make power regardless, now if you had a 350 with all the same airflow and compression the 350 would make more power, but that doesn't mean the 305 still can't beat up a lot of cars out there and belongs in the garbage.

I forsee a lot of understeer in anyone's future who has or buys a s13.
Refresh my memory, because I love how my car handles and I'd fix it up so that the v8 didn't offset that. But let's say any S13/RPS13, why would it understeer? I'm not being mailicious, i just want to make sure we're on the same page.

Re: Need Info on V8 swap

do up the comaro. Its cooler, faster, and gives trailor park style. 240's are such a main streem car now. Only fairy's and queers drive them. Comaro's are easier to do up and cheaper. Plus a comaro was ment for a v8 so keep that shit in there. You could scrap this whole v8 waste of time idea, and just spend some cheese on a 3k turbo setup and be happy as hell with it. Since you seem to have some wrench skills, it shouldnt be that hard.

Atleast spell Camaro right It's about 40 years old dude, should have heard about it somewhere.

The camaro is in worse condition than my 240, was 2 grand less than it! and I'll forget the mixed gender comment. Finally, I'm gonna be modest, I've only learned on how to work on cars in 2 MONTHS, because the camaro was such a challenge, but If I hadn't bought it I wouldn't have ever figured it out the hard way. And I learned that I love working on cars!

Does anyone agree with him? That's not exactly positive.

Re: Need Info on V8 swap

Stock fenders on my S14 weighed 2 lbs. you aren't going to save "significant weight" by doing a Silvia front end. The motors and pop up assemblies don't weigh much more compared to the glass Silvia headlights.

If you wanna rip off frontal weight, ditch the front bumper support, factory hood, relocated or replace battery, drop A/C and/or power steering, and look to the engine for lighter components.

Either way the 305 is still a relatively heavy engine due to it's iron block.

I don't think I could quantify a V8 swap without at least dropping in a hot cammed, carbed 350. The 350 can be sourced for cheap and parts are dime a dozen.

Build a 11:1 street cam'd 355, it'll make plenty of power and run awesome on a budget.

Re: Need Info on V8 swap

You'd be right about the top speed. One thing I would be changing about what you said, I am buying the T56 transmission(6 speed), so about 1-1.5k more and i guess that would be a different story then the 700R4. So now, it's up to me to make the arrangements, I think I have enough sources to start. Thanks everyone for the info, good or bad, it's just what I wanted.

And honestly, the only reason I want to use the 305 is to tell myself I didn't buy the camaro for nothing. one day you realize $1500 is missing from your bank account, right? But, if I am going to do this, I should do it right, with a nice corvette engine. But I can still do that with the 305, just depends if it ends up costing more than the corvette engine.

I just know someone's out there saying, we were talking about camaros right?...where did Corvettes come in?...O_o;;;

*edit I just saw nissan elitist's post, sorry elitist, i'll post new
