Junk 4L60e transmision

OK, I have looked everywhere that I can think and found nothing. I have a 97 Yukon with that wonderfull piece of crap transmission IMO, the 4L60e. I own a repair shop but we do not rebuild transmissions and it KILLS me to have to send things out much less my own. Anyway I have had this transmission go 2 times in 4 years and my trans guy rebuilds them for $800 new torque converter included. That is my price when I bring the trans to him so I labor it out myself. The thing is that I see tons of these 4L60's come through my shop and everyone is shocked at what that cost to repair. What I want to find out is what needs to be done to convert these trucks to a rebuilt 700 4r that I can get for $350.00 with a new converter included. Other then needing to wire up the lockout for the 700 I believe that the output shafts have different spines as well. Has anyone got any info on pulling this off or do I just need to tear this thing apart and do it form scratch solving each problem as they come up till I have the conversion completed?

Thanks in advance.

Chuck

Most common repairs for the 4L60 are reaction shell, shift solenoids and sticking valve bodies.
All 3 of these are relatively inexpensive repairs (valve bodies and solenoids only require pan removal) and the reaction sun shell requires a complete disassembly, but does not require a complete overhaul.
Sounds like your trans guy isn't doing you right.

My trans guy is no keeper but he is one of the only guys in town that will even work on these things. I would like to find a better way to go but my hands are tied so to speak. Short of getting a service manual and an overhual video and doing one myself there is little else I can do. I'm not sure I believe that people in the biz tell me that "if you can rebuild engines (which in my bread and butter) you can rebuild transmissions" but I have been thinking about giving it a try. Maybe I will do a turbo 350 as I hear they are about the easyest to do?

Anyway this one that I have now has 1,2 and R but slips in 3 and has no 4. And in fairness to my "trans guy" I work this thing to death and when I started having trouble with it I went to do a fluid change and it was just fried as could be. It did last 4 years but still. I have a street car that runs mid 10's with a 700r4 that the trans guy I love builds here in town and I have never had a single problem with it, Rearends and axels are another story

Thanks for the replys and I will check with Maddog, he is the guy in FLA right? If so I hope he was able to stay dry during the lastest storms!

Any other info that comes to mind please let me know.

Thanks again,

Chuck
