Alt. Question

I am going to be getting the pully set (both crank and alt) for my maro and while I am at I I will also be upgrading the alt. I was looking on FTPP's website for a high output alt but what is needed to change them, or should one of those just bolt up to the brackets. Also what are your recomendations for a new alt, I want to stay at about $150 for a new one.

Re: Alt. Question

huh?

Sorry, you're a little vague there. But if I get your intentions, a larger (higher output) alternator is only needed if you're running alot of amperage hungry accessories. And if so, nobody could really just recommend one out of the blue. You need to take into concideration what everything needs to run at the right levels without under or over charging. Too big of alternater can overload systems and turn your maro into one big toaster oven.

Re: Alt. Question

Now that I reread that it is a little confusing. So to answer your question yes I want the higher output alternator because 1- the pullies slow down the alternator so it doesn't work quite as well when sitting still. 2- I soon should have the rest of my stero system together (panisonic deck, all new speakers + their amp, 2000W amp, 2 10's) so it will be a little power hungry. THis is the one I am looking at-

The most popular late style Delco alternator. Powermaster enhances the performance of this alternator with a redesigned hand-wound stator, heavy duty rectifier and regulator. Air flow is increased with a baffle over the fan for better cooling. A good choice for performance vehicle owners who like to add the latest electrical accessories.

Excellent Output At idle

Proof Of Performance Tag

Complete With Fan & 6-Groove Serpentine Pulley

Tech Notes: This alternator has an 80 amp output at idle and a peak output of 140 amps.

Re: Alt. Question

Ok, that's a little clearer. I'm not sure about the idle amps but, I'd be almost positive that now the question is a little clearer, someone a little more versed in this area could help you out. All I know is you need to figure out constant pull vs. idle output you don't want to be over or under, just as close to as possible. Improper charge will hamper ecm systems, char wiring if way over, and, when it comes down to the amp, if you put it in the back, make sure you don't splice or ground close to the fuel pump ground wire.

Re: Alt. Question

Right now im running a 115 amp alternator and an 800w amp with 2 12's and i have no problems....I went to oreilys(spelling) and got my alternator for less that 100. And put that in your car. park your car with you lights on and your system blaring...if your headlights fade when the bass is being hit, get yourself a capasetor(spelling) this should help your problem...And my friend has a stock alternator in his ford explorer wich is only like 68-80amps and he is running a 3000w amp and 3 12inch subwoofers and all he did was put a capasetor in his car and he doesnt have any problems

Re: Alt. Question

That is close to what a capacitor but thats something else I need for my system. Basically you wire the cap before the amp and it acts like a big battery. It stores up a "charge" of energy then when your bass is really and your voltage drops the cap provides power to the amp. Its more complicated than that but that was the short version.

tcfco2005 - so is your new alt a higher output, than stock?
