Keyless Entry Question

I recently bought a used 2001 Windstar LX. It has power locks and windows, but did not come with a keyfob. Is there a way to check whether or not the side doors are keyless entry equipped?
I purchased two remotes off of Ebay and have tried to follow the remote programming procedure, however the doors do not "cycle" after turning the off/acc 8 times. I am certain there was a remote for this van at one point, I just can't figure out which type of remote I need or why the van doesn't go into programming mode.
Any help is much appreciated!

Straight out of my '01 owner's guide....

Reprogramming transmitters
To reprogram the transmitters yourself, place the key in the ignition and
turn from LOCK to OFF and cycle between OFF and ON eight times in
rapid succession (within 10 seconds) ending in the ON position. After
doors lock/unlock, press any control on all transmitters (up to four).
With each control press of the transmitters, the door should cycle
(lock/unlock) to confirm programming. When completed, turn the
ignition to OFF. The door locks should cycle (lock/unlock) one last time
to confirm completion of programming.

I do not beleive it is possible to programme (the car to the remote - as was correctly pointed out by someone a few threads back) without a working remote.

My understanding is that if you do not have at least one programmed you will need the dealer's (expensive) help.

If you have one then it is easy and I have done it myself on a couple of occasions.

The remote doesn't come into play until the programming sequence starts. Nowhere in my manual does it state that you need one current working one. It does say though that however many you want have (up to 4) to be available at the time programming is done. That makes me think that any current programming is immediately erased once the sequence starts.
For keys though... you need two to program more. Only one, and you're off to the dealer or Streetkeys.

I think the key question from your post was whether you have keyless entry or not. Following the previous steps your locks should cycle if you have keyless entry. So if you are doing the steps correctly and the locks do not cycle you either do not have keyless entry or the fuse is out.

Thanks so much for all of the replies! I am so utterly confused it's pitiful.
I have (many times) attempted to follow the instructions for programming the remote. I am now unsure of which position thekey should be in. I assumed that off/on meant turn the key from the point where the key is first inserted to the point where the radio turns on just prior to actual starting. Is that wrong?
Then I am unsure of whether the remote I have is correct. If I don't have power sliding doors it may not be. I really need to find out if the sliding doors are remote ready. I was hoping that there was a way- some external marking that would tell me this.
As an aside I don't know which fuse I would check if the locks don't cycle- which they don't.

I stand corrected. It is the key that requires a known working one and the remotes do not.

If I'm understanding it EXACTLY as you wrote it, you're half right.
Put the key in, and turn it one position towards starting it. This is OFF. One more is RUN (all the lights should come on and things'll start 'dinging' at you), one more is START. One position back from inserting the key is ACC. The position where you put the key in is LOCK
Try it again cycling from OFF to ON, and make sure you stop with the key in the ON position. I wouldn't be surprised if the doors have to be closed to do this either.
As an aside, I noticed something reading my manual. If something is an option, it will say "If equipped" in parenthesis. For what it's worth, the Remote Entry System section does NOT say '(if equipped)'.

PS: It looks like fuse 6 might be one you want to look at. It should be blue, 15amp. Far right side of the box, kinda by itself.

If you had power sliding doors, and they didn't move under their own power, they'd be a royal pain to move by hand.

Okay! Thanks for all of that.
Now I know that I was doing it wrong. I was turning from the "lock" position to the "on" position.
Unfortunately, I tried it ther right way (twice) and the locks still didn't cycle, so I'm reasonably certain that I do not have power sliding doors and consequently I have the wrong remote. My side doors are very easy to move by hand, so your point is well taken.
Fortunately, the remotesuperstore guy on Ebay is great and has no probelm exchanging the remotes for me.

An addendum for those who come here and are confused like me. If you do not have an interior button that operates the sliding doors- you do not have power sliding doors!
These buttons are located on the rearview mirror and on the sliding door panel.
That would be the easiest way to know whether or not your van is equipped with the power sliding door feature if )like me) you have no manula, key fob, or user manual.
The 5 button remote willnot work in a vehicle with no power sliding doors.

Well, they probably will, but you'll just have two worthless buttons.

However, since you can't even get the programming sequence to start, the right fobs aren't going to make a world of difference.

They definately will work. My van does not have power sliding doors but it does have keyless remote. When I bought it used I only received one 3 button remote. I bought a 4 button and a 5 button remote from a surplus store and they both work exactly as suggested in that I have 2 useless buttons. (On maybe my neighbours door is opening........lol)
