94 Grand Marquis doesn't try to start

I've inherited a very nice 94 MGM. But when I try to start it, I don't think it's sending elelctricity to the starter. The panel indicators come on, the doors lock, etc. But it does not even try to crank over.

The two times I have been able to start it, it started great. But that was after many futile attempts like I mentioned above. And no apparent reason as to why that particular turn of the key worked.

I suspect it to be something like a safety switch. Maybe it doesn't think it's in park, or that the brake is pushed in.

Does anyone have any ideas ? Or any suggestions as to how to trouble shoot it ?

Thanks much,

Roger

Use a test light or a multimater and see if there is any power going to the starter when you crank the key. If no check safety switch. If yes replace the starter/solenoid. Sticky solenoid or worn out starter motor brushes can act the same way. Sometimes tapping the starter with a hammer will get the starter working again for a few cranks.

Re: Re: 94 Grand Marquis doesn't try to start

Thanks. I finally got a chance to look at it but the battery had died again. Just to make sure, is the starter located just below the driver side headlight ? As you can tell, I'm not exactly a mechanic.

Also, where is "the Safety Switch" ? I assume there is more than one.

Thanks.

Roger
