New speakers....need help

Im going to be buying new speakers for my 93 sl but im not sure which ones to get. I have ZERO knowlege of speakers and audio system. Im looking to get infinity reference series.
Here is where im looking at speakers for my car. Which reference speakers should be fine that won't be too expensive? Also, what should i do for replacing the front tweeters? Thanks

Re: New speakers....need help

Depends on how much you want to spend...

I personally have not heard the infinitys, but I have heard the JL, Alpine, Pioneer, Focal, Sony, Kenwood, Clarion, and JBL against each other and of those:

For the price-per-performance I like JL
For all-out-performance I liked Focal
for all around speaker I like Alpine

Personally I have installed Focal 6.5" fronts (comes with 1" titanum tweeters which can be mounted in the stock spots in the dash) and Alpine Type-R 6x9 rears.

Re: New speakers....need help

I think the fronts should be component with the tweeters mounted in the dash and the rear coaxial.

My reasoning is that the fronts are mounted pretty low in the doors and tweeters in general don't have really good dispersion (not that the dash is that much better, but it at least has a hard surface to reflect against) and the rears are around ear height pretty much pointed at you head.

Well you picked the right forum, since I know alot about stereos and stuff. I do all my own installation, and the stuff I buy is top notch. Check out my signature and you can see my subs.

Re: New speakers....need help

fyi i have infinity kappa 63.5i fronts and infinity kappa 693.5i 6x9's. the day i got them in the mail (about 1.5 years ago) i hooked them up to my home stereo to hear the SQ of them, and the SPL of them was like a 10 in sub. I was pretty amazed. I rave them running off of my deck right now, and they sound pretty good. Eventually I'll get an amp to run them off of to make them sound even better. I recommend these speakers 100%

Re: New speakers....need help

Honestly it all comes down to your ear, thats right forget the advice that everyone gives about the best and the worst. Go listen to the speakers, make your decision based on how it sounds to you with what you are going to have, make sure you are not hearing a set of speakers on an amp if you will not have them on an amp. If you have friends who have aftermarket speakers, hop in their car, play with the settings on the stereo, ask first or you might pssss them off. In the end it doesnt matter what brand you buy, where you buy them, or how much you spent but rather how happy you are with them. My first speakers were the laughing stock of my friends who all had 3 times the money i did, but until they found out the brand they thought they were awesome, and me well I stayed happy just having something better than stock that sounded the way i wanted it to.

Everyone here could tell you what to get but in the end who are you satisfying? Now if you want to know the most expensive or the highest consumer rated or something technical, ask away but just remember the difference between fact and opinion.
