Oil Filter

Did a few searches and could not come up with an answer. which oil filter do you reccommend using in a 97 eclipse gs-t. it has 82000 miles and i am currently using mobil 1 synthetic. i go to the dealer to get the OEM mitsubishi oil filter but i was just wondering if anyone reccommends anything else.

Re: Oil Filter

With K & N you are paying for K & N's name , advertising and so forth.

I cked with several auto parts stores awhile back as well as the dealer. This is the result

If you change the oil at 2500-3000 mile intervals as you really should almost any filter is as good as any other, from WalMarts brand all the way to K & N.

Purolator, Fram, AC/Delco etc, one is as good as the other when changing the oil as recommended.

K & N will say that their filter does the best job , Ive used K & N on my sons Mits as well as my 77 Datsun 280 Z and didnt see any big difference outside of the fact that the KandN cost two to three times more.

K & N is nice to see on an engine if you can, showing that you will spend whatever to have a name on a filter, so if you are gonna change the oil at 2500 -3000 miles , then the Purolator, Fram etc will and does work just as well.

The big thing is changing the oil more so than the filter that is used. Or so NAPA , AutoZone, and Advanced along with the dealer have told me.

Yep, I bet the Wal-Mart brand filter and the K & N are the same.

Besides the fact that I have noticed that my oil stays cleaner longer, I have personnally cut open a K & N, PureOne and a Fram filter. There is a tremendous difference between the 3. For starters, the K & N has a drainback plug, which the Fram does not. It also has significantly more and denser filtering material than the other 2. Also, that K&N was a bitch to cut in half, proving that it had thicker walls than the others and the ability to hold higher pressures.

The K&N also uses an impregnated cellulose fiber as the filtering material as opposed to the paper/cardboard used by the other manufactures allowing it to filter down to 10 microns. The cheaper brands only filter down to about 40 microns.

That coupled with the fact that it has a 1" nut on the end for easy removal, along with a hole at the end so you can wire it to the housing, makes it the filter for me. I have read too many stories of DSM oil filters backing themselves off while driving.

So, yeah, I'm sure that the Wal-Mart filter is the same as the K&N.

Personally, I don't mind spending the extra money on the filter and oil, as almost everyone will tell you that an oil change is the best preventative maintence you can perform for your car.

So if you want to buy the $2 Wal-Mart filter and $1/qt oil, have at it.

You can go ahead and say that, but the Pure1 is known to be a decent filter. I put it right under the K&N filter, but price wise I like the sound of $6 over $14, when the difference is minimal. There was a guy who bought like 30 different filter, cut them open, and documented which ones sucked ass and which ones were decent. I looked and couldn't find the link in the 30 seconds that I searched quick, but I will look later and post it up if someone else dosn't before me. Pure1 was ranked one of the better filters.

Re: Oil Filter

Hey , all I was doing was passing along information that I had obtained from various suppliers of oil filters. I never said that I would use them.

Personally I use BOSCH on all of my cars , as well as Castrol GTX oil which comes out of all 4 vehicles at 2-2500 miles and no more.

Im sure there is a difference just as in all things. I however just dont see and considering how frequently I change the oil, spending the money on K & N thats all, when the Bosch filters are in all likelyhood just as good as well as from a company that I use alot of other parts from, i.e plugs, plug wires etc

Your right, they didn't test K&N. Probably because nobody disputes their quality, just that they are expensive. I agree with the NGK spark plug recommendation on DSM's.

Thanks for the input. looks like next oil change is going to be a k&n oil filer for me. if its that much better, i dont mind spending the extra few dollars. i dont drive the car much anyway. BTW what are you guys considering to be a better oil filter, the way it is constructed? or the way the car runs while using it?
