fuck transmissions
ok so ive been out of the loop for a while school is consuming all my time. i havent had my car for a few weeks because it wont go into fucking gear. why i dont know. kinda out of money right now to fix it though. and i havent even had the time to worry about it. i miss driving. any suggestions on why i cant even get it into gear when the car is running?

it would still go into gear if it was the clutch i would think. im not saying it wont engage im saying i cant even get the shifter to go into a gear if the car is on. and if i try to start it in gear it wont crank

try your throwout bearing. its most likely the problem, ive worked on a few cars where that was the problem

sounds like your clutches hydraulic system is shot. when the clutch isn't dis engaging your not putting into gear. lift the car up and look underneth it on the passsenger side, then have a friend press down on the clutch and see if you see the slave cylinder is moving or not.

Most likely:
Clutch line is shot Slave Cylinder is shot Throwout Bearing is shot Clutch is ded. Unlikely: Master cylinder Crawl under your car and look for leaks on the slave... if there are none its your TOB or Clutch.

if its the throw out bearing it would be screaming or making noise when you depress the clutch.

True.
I dont know exactly how it works but when you toast the shit out of a clutch it won't disengage. Same problem he's having happened to my friends MR2 about two weeks ago, turned out the clutch was just burnt up.

If it goes into gear when the engine is not running but will not when it is running, Sounds like your clutch is not disengaging the input shift of the transmission. To verify just raise the rear wheels off the ground and try starting with it in gear and the clutch pedal depressed if the wheels start to turn your clutch is not disengaging.
A fried clutch disc can detach from the middle disc that holds the clutch material (pulls off rivets), in affect making it "thicker" so it then drags on the surfaces of the flywheel and pressure plate keeping the input shaft spinning, it needs to just about stop to engage a gear. If that is not your problem, as suggested, an easy check is to grab friend and watch the travel of the clutch arm at the flywheel housing as your friend depresses the pedal. No movement, or not enough, clutch wont fully disengage, it doesn't take much to cause the problem. Hydraulic clutch, check fluid level. Good luck. Last edited by 4Wheel; 10-28-2005 at 09:20 PM.
