more strange happenings

I left my coolant lid off by accident and when the coolant ran out the car didn't overheat it just shut down, the last message on the computer was ck charging system,after we replaced coolant and jumped off it ran fine for a day, I decided to drain the coolant and replace, I could not find the plug so I dicconected the hose to drain, after refilling the car will not start, not even jump off. I tried to dicconect the battery and now it will jump off but die after you remove the cables, the computer says check charging system and the voltage light is on on the dash. Any ideas?
