Wheel bearings & ABS

My abs light has been comming on sparadically the past week. Some days it would come on some days it wouldn't. I took it to an auto shop and they can't diagnose it unless the light is on, and its hard to catch it on at a time that I can go to the shop, but the guy told me that it could be a bearring sensor thats getting triggered. Is there any truth to this and how can I figure out which bearring it is without a diagnostics machine if its possible? Also what tools will I need to do this job myself. I've done rotors and pads, so the bearrings will be a first for me. Thanks!

Re: Wheel bearings & ABS

Take your car out, if the ABS sensor only kicks on after you go above a certain speed and then stay son til you shut off the car, you'd be smart to check the sensor down there first. Much cheaper fix.

I drive the car everyday, and it just comes on at random. Some days it won't come on some day it will. Some days it takes a long trip and others it only takes a few minutes. I don't think it has anything to do with speed because I get it up to 70 on the highway just about everyday, and it comes on at slower speeds normally. It hasn't come on the last two days, but I had a problem with it Saturday. Its just goofy.

Yes the mechanic's diagnosis is plausable and probably the likely culprit. I don't know of any way to positively determin which speed sensor has gone south if the problem only appears occasionally.
