Spark plugs?

I am going to do a tune up on my jeep. I was wondering what spark plugs perform the best in the Cherokee. I have an 89 I-6 with 178k on it. Right now I use the Bosch coppers in it, but I have noticed some fouling and build up. Would the platinums help with this?

Re: Spark plugs?

I'll probably get some heat for this, but I only use the Bosch platinum +4 plugs in all of my vehicles. It is the only plug I've used since the day they hit the market. Never had a failure and always get improved performance and mileage.

Re: Spark plugs?

I dont like the bosh +4. i will not give you any heat on that, just a difference of opinion.Champion is what i use and its fine. but by all means, try a few different plugs till it frun good.

I would stick to a factory plug.
You say that there is build up on the plugs. this may not be a plug problem you may be running to rich on the fuel side or not enough air.
Seem like that there is too much carbon in there.
You might want to check your O2 sensor.
Also check your cap, rotor and wires. These also could be causing
improper detonation. In which will also cause build up...

I have used a Bosch, but switched back to the Champion. Most mechanics that work on XJ with the 4.0L will tell you they run best on the factory Champ or the truck Champ. The Bosch don't work and they cost more.

What I like about the +4 is that it's almost impossible to foul the plug. Does your jeep smoke at all? I would make sure to do the wires, cap and rotor as well as the plugs.

Re: Spark plugs?

No, it does not smoke. I have just noticed some fouling when I pull the plugs, not a lot. Just thought it was because I was using the cheap-o's

Believe it or not, most I-6 yrs. 86-89 have motorcraft Distributors a.k.a. Ford.. Motocraft plugs work well in my Jeep. Lots of Ford electronics as well on our Jeeps. go figure
