cultural infulences

how much do you think your ethnic culture affect your daily life? as in education (do you want to learn/parental infulences), work ethics, dating, accepting mainstream societal norms, or anything that we take for granted (until someone from a different cultural perspcetive points that out.)

more and more i'm beginning to find that, at least for me, its beginning to play a larger part of my life. education for example... i used to think that if i can do it, anyone can do it. but a good friend of mine, called me narrowminded and that not everyone shares the same cultural belief in valuing education as i do (or my culture for that matter). to reinforce that, i just read in the paper today that today's school systems may or may not be up to par but the parental influences and involvment in the education of their children make all the difference. i believe this is inherent in the parent and the parent's value on education and is similarly reflected in their culture. one perpetuates the other in this case.

education here is only taken as an example but it makes me wonder how much of who i am and my beliefs are cultural moreso than my 'own'.

You're post was kind of confusing, but I'm pretty sure I got the basic idea of it.

And I partially agree with your friend. Not everyone is able to do what you do *gets hit for the 'everyone is special in their own way' speech*

We got a major downfall in education when we took moral teaching out of school (Bible, prayer, anything related to God). Kids lost their desire to work as hard or be as obedient. In my opinion we need to put it back in...but some people just won't have that. They don't realize that the kids being taught the stuff don't need to believe it...they just need to learn it.

[/opionated rambling]

Re: cultural infulences

I think he was just asking your opinion on culture. I threw my Religion into it because without it...I wouldn't have an opinion :-P
