Finally found the limit of my 4l60e tranny
It's obviously at the 12 second barrier. When it finally cools off, the 11s start coming, then the 2-3 shift craps out. Funny thing is it didn't do it at the track.....it did it sometime sitting in my freaking shed.
Oh, well....its time to upgrade to the 4l80e so this crap won't be happening again. While its down, I went ahead and stripped everything out of the cab. Everything is getting sanded down for paint and the roll cage is going in. I'm probably going to strip out pretty much anything I can get away with for next year. I also purchased a 4 link/coilover setup that we will be starting on as well. I guess I needed the break down to get some other things done I've been meaning too, but damn that was an expensive tranny to only last a year.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Why not just go with a manual 6-speed from a corvette?

Re: Finally found the limit of my 4l60e tranny
Allison 5-spd man! Or even the new 6-spd! I know you're not making over 650 lbs-tq, and thats what the Duramaxes make for 06, and they can handle it.
No doubt they'll cost more but it'd be worth it I'd think. Or you could just go old school and build ya a Powerglide! 2 gears baby. I garuntee your ET will pick up! Wouldn't be to streetable though.

Re: Finally found the limit of my 4l60e tranny
I'm surprised the stock 4l60e held up as well as it did to your power. You will definetly be happy with the 80e though. Mine did 105k of extreme heavy duty miles before it needed to be rebuilt and it woulda gone a good amount longer before completely unglued. I consistantly carry over 5k pounds in my truck's bed in stop/go traffic and it does great.

The 60 that was in there was installed last October. It was a fully built one from Team Tripp out of Georgia. It lasted 2 days over a year, and as luck would have it, my warranty went out in a year.
I had thoughts about putting in a 400, but I'm really wanting to stay with an electronic tranny. The 40 conversion is really simple, and there are several companies out there making complete swapover kits, so I really feel the ease of installation is the deciding factor. I'm going to get the engine sent off soon to get my 408 build underway, and I've also begun scouting out some companies for turbo kits. Next year is going to be great!!!!!

Re: Finally found the limit of my 4l60e tranny
Meh, go with the 80e. The 400 is a great tranny(I have one for my Camaro)...but the 80e is a 4 spd electronic version of the 400 anyway.
Your truck is going to be awesome dude, but unless you have a small car that gets good gas mileage you should be shot for gross fuel consumption

Re: Finally found the limit of my 4l60e tranny
Heard that then. Well good luck with it.
Friend of mine has a Turbo 400 in his race car. Its not very good for the 1/8th mile but I'd say it'd be OK for a 1/4. 1st gear is just so low in it. I think it shifts just past 60ft, maybe even before it. It shifts again around the 330 and then it just falls on its face. His car ran 6.69 in the 1/8th but only 99 mph, and its got plenty of hp. Turbo set up will be pretty awesome on your truck. Be very very fast, lol. Next year is always awesome!

The gas stations around here love to see me coming and they all know me by name now. It's actually pretty sad, but I didn't build it to save mother earth or fight for the tree huggers. I built it to scare small children idling in the parking lot. chevytrucks92- I agree on the 400. The 80 is just the best way for me to go for both the strip and the street. I really need more gear than what the 400 is going to give me for the other end of the track.

Re: Finally found the limit of my 4l60e tranny
Yes sir. Especially since you INSIST on driving your truck on the road, lol. Just j/k.
Seriously though, for just drag racing, a powerglide is the only way to go.
