Re: taking off bed to get to fuel pump

I did it on a Dodge one time and dropped the tank. I'd say removing the bed was much easier.

At a show in carlise a buddys pump went down the tubes, They removed the bed and in a matter of only an hour or so they had everything put back and he was on the road again. I would have to say its the easiest way but i dont know for sure. Good luck

i have also did one on a doge and had to take the bed off. But i also have a 99 silverado and you can just undo the tank straps and reach your hand in ther and yank that baby out. My 99 silverado was making the ringing nose for about 2 years. So one weekend i just did it. I sugest you get the sending unit with the pump. Because i see people all the time on these trucks when they start it up there gas gauge jumps a few time. That is you sending unit. You can get the pump and sending unit all in one for about $212

Re: taking off bed to get to fuel pump

its getting close for me to change the pump/sending unit cause I havent been able to tell where the hell my fuel level has been at for months but I havent been able to but it yet because of money issues. ANYWAY....not too sure how I want to do this....I think I am going to take the bed off. Its only like 4 bolts. Do the beds need to be realigned when I put it back on??? Cause I have heard of that before because on some trucks, it is slotted where the bolts go so you can bolt the bed down in different spots.

Re: taking off bed to get to fuel pump

When I changed the pump in my 89 chevy pickup, I took the bed off. It was pretty easy, only 8-10 bolts, the tank fill hose, and brake light harness had to be removed. Then my father and I lifted it off by hand. I would say it is the simplest way to go. The whole operation took about an hour.

Actually on my 92 I had the tank dropped and the fuel pump replaced in just under an hour. We have a motorcycle lift so we used that for the tank, just undid the two straps, then disconnected a lot of the things and it wasn't that hard.

If you're doing it by yourself, you're going to want to drop the tank. If you've got 3 or 4 other buddies to help you lift the bed off, do it that way. It's real easy to get the module out with the bed off. If you've got a sprayed in bedliner, you might not be able to. If you have a drop in liner, you may need to remove it first. It depends which way the bolts holding the bed go in. (From the bottom or the top)

Re: taking off bed to get to fuel pump

i HAVE A 99 SB
I dropped the tank

IT came out easy as hell
maybe 10 minutes to get it out
IT took lokger to get back in but thatys cause i had 7 gallons of gas in mine

IF i did it again I would drop the tank and empty the gas into something like maybe another car
then put the empty tank back in place

Ive never removed a bed to do it. but if you drain the tank when its out i dont see how it could be any easier.

I drain the tank too when it's out, but I also have the advantage of having a lift at work to do it on.
