1993 Rodeo speedometer gone crazy

I have read some threads about speedometers going crazy but they were for all newer trucks. So I'm not sure if the correction would be the same for this truck. In the threads that I read they said something about a speedo cable and I also read about VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor).

Can someone help me out?

sxwk12- What year and engine do you have?

Some Rodeo's have a trans. mounted VSS, some have them in the instrument cluster.

Just reread the post title, you probably have a trans mounted sensor if you have the V6. They're around $200 bucks at Autozone. Still don't know if this is your problem. Does it go crazy all the time? Maybe a loose connector or wire if not all the time.

No it's not the V6 engine, it's the smaller one.

If you have the VSS built into the instrument cluster, then you would have to replace the speedometer (probably whole cluster) if VSS is bad.

You can test it to make sure. You'll have to remove the instrument cluster and test the output with an ohm meter. If good, the ohm meter should read continuity and open alternately while slowing turning the speedometer inner shaft.
This info. is from a Chilton's manual, so if your handy and have the proper tools, you should be able to check/replace this yourself. I'll bet the instrument cluster is a dealer only part and your gonna have to order it.

remove the speedo cable from the rear of the tranny remove the housing the cable goes into there is a gear on theere that wares out over time examine the gear if its worn replace it that willl be much cheaper than throwing parts at it
