Weird Idle Problem (97 Taurus)

This is an unusual problem. When I am in Park with the engine idle, the engine oftentimes shoots up to 2000-2500 rpm. This problem is more of a nuisance than anything. Othertimes, it stays at a normal rpm. I dont think merely adjusting it will solve the problem... Any suggestions?
