05 silverado coolant problem

I have a 05 silverado that has 12,000 miles on it and now I am using a gallon of coolant every 250 miles. It is not leaking anywere I can see So it has tu be burning out the exhaust. Has anbody had this problem or just me. I guess I will have to take it to the dealer but I really hate to deal with them. Thanks

Sounds like you have a possible intake gasket leak. These motors are pretty notorious for that, and there's even a TSB for it (I think). It should be covered under warranty being on 05 with only 12k on it.

Re: 05 silverado coolant problem

mine did this at 70K. It ended up being a cracked head gasket. I found it after filling the resovoir 4 times and it was too late. It comtaminated the oil really bad. I had it fixed, and at 90K the engine locked up. I was told all the water in the oil for that long ruined some of the bearings. Check your oil immediately, or change it even to see if it is milky at all.

Do you get alot of white smoke when you first start it in the morning? Does it make a whistling noise when you're driving at highway speeds? If so, it's probably the intake manifold gaskets. A cracked head or bad head gasket would force cylinder compression into the coolant system. See if coolant gets pushed out of the radiator. Take the cap off and start the truck, and see. If there are bubbles in coolant reservoir or the radiator, or you get a geyser of coolant coming out, that would indicate a bad head gasket as well. If you don't see any of these symptoms, suspect the intake gaskets.
