Question "GM approved" wheel and tire combos

I have an 05 Silverado LS crewcab 4X4 (No Z71 option). I'm trying to find a wheel and tire combo that will fit without having to add a lift kit, but I do intend to level off the front end. I was looking to go with 33x12.50x18 Toyo Open country M/T tire (Which I believe is roughly the same size as a 285/75 tire) on an 18 X 9 inch rim. Every site I go to says to use "Only GM approved tire and wheel combinations. My question(s) is/are, does anyone know what "Combos" are "GM approved", and/or, will this size tire fit without any problems? Thanks.

Re: "GM approved" wheel and tire combos

Try any number of the threads listed here for a definetive answer:
Tire Size

From what I recall, 33's will fit without modification or rubbing. As for GM approved combinations, unless someone else here knows. I suggest looking at GM's website.

Re: "GM approved" wheel and tire combos

GM is worried about compromising suspension components and braking efficiency here. Also the pcm should be reprogrammed if possible for the tire size relative to trans shift points and speedo accuracy.

I looked on the GM websites, and all it says is "See dealer for details"
I did the very search mentioned above and it seems others have used this size tire without any problems. I intend to use a leveling kit to raise the front end slightly to be sure. I got a buddy at the dealership who'll reprogram the PCM for free. Here's a link to the leveling kit I found if you're interested. Thanks

Thanks. Just joined this morning. I plan on being around for awhile. This Silverado of mine is my first new vehicle, and naturally, I need it to look better, go faster, be badder, etc, etc. Problem is, I live in a really rural area, so everthing has to be special ordered, or I have to drive 100 miles to get it, so naturally I want to make sure things are going to work before I go through all that. Being a mechanic though, I hope I can give as good advice as I (Hopefully) get.

Re:

Here is my 2 cents worth on this topic. #1 your tires should fit. You might get a bit of rubbing on the lower air dam while turning and suspension is compressed. You can trim it or deal with it. Its not too bad so I deal with it. Yours may be a bit worse because my tires are only about 32.5 in tall. 305/50's. Simple enough.

One other thing I will warn you about is moving up on tire size and you factory warranty, although it is against federal law to deny a claim becasue a the presence of a non factory item, some dealerships have been denying claims on suspension, steering, even tranny problems due to upgraded tires. I had one claim denied by a dealer because my pickup didnt come with factory 20's. You will find some dealers that are performance oriented and have no problems. See what kind of dealer you have. It really didnt bother me since I have 4 chevy dealers within 15 miles of me. I found this site since Im preparing to sell my half ton for the new 2500 DMAX with LBZ engine This is a quote I found and will attach l link to the article

While some owners feel anything less than 35's are too small, the 265/75R16 has always been a popular tire size for a heavy-duty 3/4-ton pickup when considering both function and appearance. However, all of GM's 3/4-ton pickups are factory equipped with smallish 245/75R16 tires, and GM has gone so far as to deny drivetrain warranty coverage if your truck is equipped with anything other than 245's. That's just plain dumb.

Sorry about the long windedness but I hope this helps

P.S. If anyone is interested in 20's and tires for their half ton, im taking offers on mine, tires have about half tread left

Re: "GM approved" wheel and tire combos

Why are you taking them off and how much?

Well, since I've been taking my truck to the dealer to have the oil changes done so I have a maintenance record, and they usually check the tire pressure, it seems they've been overfilling the tires, and now I have the front tires wearing in the middle from being overinflated. Problem is, now Chevy won't warranty them BECAUSE they were overinflated, even though they were the ones that did it. SO, I'm taking them off to replace them with 4 new ones, and since it's a 4X4, I want some all terrains, just a little taller and wider than stock, on some nicer rims. As to "How Much?", I haven't really thought about what I want to do with them once I get the new ones.
