Angry high oil pressure reading?

hey whats going on? ok so i have bought a 92 achevia s 2.3 and i started to mod it. starting small low income, any way i increased the air flow and exaust and reset my computer. now im getting my oil gage bouncing past 80 when i have my foot on the gass. when depress its stedy at 40. so what could be wrong. Thinkin i messed the computer up.
tip of the day: at 55 mph a 92" achevia can stand up to a 5 pt buck with only a head dent in the hood. tested!

Re: high oil pressure reading?

If you have that high an oil pressure then there has to be a problem. Several items should be checked. First, change the sending unit for the guage. Simplest and easiest and if it is bad will give erroneous readings. You can also replace it with a mechanical guage to see what you are actually getting. Another item to check is oil viscosity. If you are running a heavy weight oil you will get high readings. Next it is possible that the oil bypass valve is stuck closed. This regulates oil pressure and if it sticks closed you will have high oil pressure readings. Finally, make sure that the oil filter is not plugged. This can cause high oil pressure. Not likely if you change oil routinely but it is a possibility. Good Luck and welcome to AF!

Re: high oil pressure reading?

I have a '92 SOHC 2.3 and the oil gauge is doing the same thing. Changed the pressure sending unit last night; no changes. Still pegs near 80 lbs pressure, and at times, the check gauges light comes on briefly (I'm assuming this is happening due to the gauge reading being so high). Did you find anything out with your engine?

Thanks, Dennis

Re: high oil pressure reading?

If you have excessive oil pressure, check the pressure relief valve..it could be sticking
