High Mileage Mclarens

I was just reading my collection of car magazines, and loved re-reading the ones that contained info, road tests and articles on the F1.

In one of them (Classic & Sportscar Sept 03 edition, with Juan Barazi's F1 reg. N884PWV on the front cover) page 103 has David Clark, F1 Salesman, answering questions. One of the questions was 'How do you see Mclaren F1 values going?' to which he replied 'i think the racecars will be the most valuable, with the 5 commemorative F1 LM's at the top.....Several F1's have done more than 40,000 miles including one in Japan.............'

Seeing as this article was written for the Sept 03 edition, the mileage must have gone up. I also imagine that the Japanese F1 that has racked up all those miles could be the one that was in the BEST motoring video, the one with TAG HEUER on the rear flank??...........

So, has anyone got any pictures of an F1's instruments showing the mileage or know of any articles which quote mileages?

Re: High Mileage Mclarens

We still have no idea which F1 was in the best motoring video (unless Erik knows and hasn't told me ) and there was a rumor that that car was stolen immediatley after the best motoring shoot. I find this unlikely and have seen no proof of it. There are several F1's in Japan, probably more that we don't know of. Off the top of my head, i can think of at least 5 road cars, an LM, GT, and at least 1 GTR. I've not seen many photos of the "Tag Heuer" car, which also may be the same car that sported "Head" decals. Its hard to say which F1(s) have that high mileage. We know its definaltley not the white car. My guess is that its either the silver car with red pinstripe or the plain silver car.

On your other question about mileage pics, i'll see what i can dig up. I know drew posted pics of the LM's instrument cluster, but i can't remember if you can see the mileage or not.

I have the TagHeuer car listed as "probably #012" since its appearance is nearly identical to chassis #045 and both are listed as being painted "Dark Silver". That video is from December 1994, and chassis #029 was the last car built in 1994 so it obviously can't be #045.

Funny you mention the rumor of the theft. I just came across those posts the other day when I was scanning through old threads and I had a pretty good laugh about them once more.

As for mileage photos, I don't think you'll find many, as it's only displayed when the key is in. It's pretty rare to see photos of a the gauges when the engine is running, and even then, the mileage readout is much lower, and often obscured by the steering wheel depending on the angle the photo is taken from.

I looked back at the video that tvrfreak had shared of him revving the engine in XP5 at the factory and you could see the display for a few seconds, but the readout was never clear. I know that car has some pretty high mileage. When it completed it's 240mph record top speed run at Ehra Lessien, the mileage was reported as 77,003km or 47,849 miles. That was in back in 1998 mind you, so I'm sure the number has grown.

Without digging too deep, this shot I took of #068's odometer is really the only one I can think of. Of course that number is impressive, but for a whole other reason.

421 miles lol! I wonder if it was on its second tank of gas or third. And is it still on its original fuel bladder? Imagine, it could have had the original fuel bladder changed after just one tank of gas!!!!

the f1 may be getting old but it was also way ahead of its time, and still looks modern, even more so, than most of the super cars around today

I know, like the Ferrari F-40, so boxy it looks like it came from the 80's but the F1 looks like it could have been made yesterday.

Re: High Mileage Mclarens

My first post in the McLaren forums but I had an automobile magazine arive about a month ago and it said something about a Bugatti (spelling?). It has a faster top speed than the McLaren and is now the fast productioncar. Could someone help me out with this.

Maybe this post isn't necessary for this topic.
