idle problems

I have a 93 honda civic dx. My problem is that when in neutral my car idle fluxuates up and down anywhere between 1000 and 5000 rpm. I have an after market muffler and air intake. Does anyone know what is the problem and how to fix. Please help.

I had a very similar problem, it turned out to be the idle control valve. Luckily mine was able to be cleaned and reinstalled, but if yours is fluctuating that bad it may need to be replaced. It's in the throttle body. On the majestic honda website it's only about a $75 part, I'm not sure how difficult it is to change it as I had a mechanic do mine for me.

I had the same problem after my car sat for about a month. I but a full tank of gas and Lucas fuel system cleaner in my tank and its never heppened since. I'd say try that before you go replacing parts.

does sound like iacv( idle air control valve) could be throttle position sensor too...idle air control is located on the throttle body and easily removed with a t25 torx bit(there are two of them)..take it off and spray it out with some electrical parts cleaner and replace it if the problem persistd relapce the part

Re: idle problems

hopefully this helps because i know how annoying it can be to go through and to replace parts that dont need replacing try taking out the idle adjusment screw from the throttle body an put some locktite on it put it back in an adjust your idle to spec.
the reason why this happens is because the screw actually backs itself out with all the pressure and vibration.causing it to idle erraticly good luck
