89 5-speed removal

HELP!!!!! I've got my tranny ready to come out ( from underneath ) but I can't seem to get the tranny away from the engine far enough to be able to lower it. Car is an 89 Escort. Anyone ever changed 5-speed tranny in an 89 Escort without pulling the engine also? I need to renew my clutch and I hate to pull the engine. Everything is loose and i just lack an inch or two. The back of the tranny hits the inner fender while the front of it hasn't cleared the clutch assembly far enough to be able to lower it. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Doug

Well Doug... Loosen the motor mounts and you can get about an inch or 2 just positioning that.

Re: 89 5-speed removal

Okay thx. I'll try that. I wondered about letting the engine lower / tilt or something. Hopefully that will work. Thanks for your help man.

Re: 89 5-speed removal

Well, I got it out. I didn't have to loosen the engine mounts, just tilted the engine down a bit. It was pretty tight but I got it. just a little follow up in case anyone else runs into it.

That's good to hear. How is the car running? I heard that they can live for a long time if taken care of and driven nicely. How many miles does that little baby have?

There is a perfect example of built ford tough. I looked at one for a daily driver but they had beat the hell out of it. I swear they probably jumped it somewhere and still wanted $900 for it with 170,000 mi.
