Need Advice! Please!

I've got a '98 GTI that has been having problems for a few months now. It takes a long time for it to switch gears (and it's manual!) and concerns me to drive on the highway. I'm a girl and don't want to be taken advantage of by a mechanic or dealership. Any suggestions as to where to go or what to do?

i dont think dealers would take advantage of you... and you'd be able to tell if he/she is a shady mechanic or not (just a quick look around shop can tell you alot of how he/she runs the place)

but thats neither here nor there. you probably just have alot of miles on the tranny/drivetrain. do youkeep up with maintenance and all that stuff? how many miles? im gonna just guess that its your tranny giving out from wear.

but then again... laggy shifts arent usually the symptoms of a worn tranny. maybe your clutch is coming loose somehow...?
