Exclamation Reprogramming Keyless Entry on a 98 Grand Prix

Reprogramming RKE Transmitters

We just bought a 98 GP GTP and only recieved one set of keys and remote. Searching through these posts I found many different instructions on programming a new remote.

Here are the correct steps to program the remotes for a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix.

1 Get in car and close all doors.
2 Pull the “mall pgm” fuse.
3 Insert key and turn ignition to ACCESSORY. (back 1)
a. Listen for bell(s).
b. Turn ignition off and quickly back to ACCESSORY.
4 Open and close door.
a. Should hear 1 bell to confirm diagnostic mode.
5 Press and hold both the lock and unlock buttons on the RKE transmitter.
a. Hold buttons for approx. 15 seconds.
b. Bell should chime after 7 seconds, continue to hold for second bell.
6 Repeat step 5 for each transmitter. (max 4) (1 bell after 1st transmitter.)
7 Turn ignition off.
8 Replace “mall pgm” fuse.
9 Open Doors.
10 Test transmitters

NOTE: Have all of your remotes on hand when starting this process. Resetting one will cause all others to not function. You must reset all devices at the same time.

Open your glovebox and remove the fuse panel at the righthand portion of the glove box. Turn the panel around that you just removed and the diagram is there.

I did this step by step numerous times and nothing. I even replaced the battery in the transmitter and redid the steps, still nothing.
Any suggestions?

net kitten - it is very possible that you are following the procedure step-by-step perfectly. Unfortunately, if the previous owner of the vehicle (assuming there was a previous owner) installed an aftermarket alarm or remote start it would have disabled the default RKE system. Or, your RKE hardware may have gone faulty over time. Or, not sure about this one, but not all cars are setup to receive remote keyless entry. I believe that most if not all GPs are, but not sure. Think a dealership can check your car by VIN to see if it's programmed to accept RKE or not

ya its hard to tell what people have done electronically on a car until you really start checking things out- like he said hit up the dealer an in a mater of mins. they run the vin an will tell ya everything about the car - an when they do that ask if they have any un-completed recalls on the car as well

RT,
If someone jumped in front of you at 180 MPH, you could be a sleep in the back seat. It wouldn't matter. Your eyes wouldn't even have time to get "real big".

I have a 99 GTP and mine is located in fuse panel which is located beside the glove box. It will be marked on back of cover.

I had same problem and I finally took to dealer and they told me that I need to replace the receiver and I have no idea where that is located.

Well i know the mods on here wont like you ressurecting an old post, but before they close this one i might as well tell you though that yes you might need a new remote. i just bought a new remote for my 98 GTP and followed those instructions and it works perfect for me now.

No problem Mike561. You just made it on time. But I had to close the thread.
