Turbo Exhaust

What's up everybody? I have a question. What diameter of exhaust piping should I get on my GSR if I plan on boosting in the future? 2 1/2 or 3 "? Will the GReddy Evo 2 work just fine? Or should I buy a turbo specific cat back? Comment's, suggestions?

What size turbo are you getting and what are your power goals.....that kinda determines the size of the exhaust you'll need. I don't think you'd go wrong w/ a 3" though.....

Re: Turbo Exhaust

the write up that everyone posts when asking about turbos (the one on turboing a 2nd gen teg) says that 2.5 is fine for up to 400hp, you won't notice any difference with a 3 inch...but it's up to you.

Re: Turbo Exhaust

2.5 is fine. 3 inch is not neccessary, but, the full potential of your setup will not be realized without it.

in the end it is personal preference for me. the switch from a 2.5" greddy evo to a custom kteller 3" was more of a sound issue than a performance issue for me. i didnt want it to get louder. in the end it just got deeper. not bad at all.

whatever route you go, just at least drop out the cat. if your going to be illegal with a turbo, make it count.

if you live in a state such as CA, your not going to pass the visual when they pop your hood unless you go with greddy and any other kits out there that go out of there way to get carb certified. even if your state doesnt have the visual and all it has is the sniffer being carb certified means nothing.

Thanks guy's for the info. And yeah I was going to ask the same thing. Since when is having a Greddy kit illegal? Because that is probably the kit that I am going to get unless I learn of a better and also legal setup. By the way, why is Greddy so popular compared to other's that are also legal? What about Turbonetic's? Isn't that street legal?

Re: Turbo Exhaust

the emissions testing suck for you guys, i heard you didn't get first an second gen imprezas cos with trubos they didnt pass emissions testing. in the UK we get everything, we have quite relaxed emissions an sound regulations, as far as i know. i know a few people running road-legal race cars as daily drivers, they're more like touring cars.

lots of people here go turbo & de-cat an run legally.

Wow, I should move to Great Brittan. Seriously. Or at least somewhere in Europe like Germany. It sucks here in California. We have the worst emmision laws in all the U.S.

Re: Turbo Exhaust

the carb sticker on the greddy kit is year, make, and model specific. im not sure if a greddy kit on a jdm engine is considered "legal". call greddy about that.

as for your quest and search for a legal turbo. an 18g turbo sucks ass. the greddy kit does not come with an intercooler and bov because that would make the kit illegal. your search and turbo quest will tell you that these are necessary components that are required to run and make your turbo experience worthwhile. when you get to this point and also decide to drop out the cat because it is so restrictive, you will realize that you spent so much money on a crappy 18g turbo kit that never came an intercooler and bov, and on top of that, you decided to buy the bov and intercooler because you needed it. now that you bought the intercooler and bov that makes it illegal, you realize that youve spent so much money just to make it legal that in the end, you made it illegal anyways. now that its illegal, and you dropped out the cat, you now have dreams at night that with all the money youve spent, you could have pieced together your own turbo kit that would have been so much nicer than the greddy.

greddy is not popular. they just have a good advertisement department. also, theve spent thousands of dollars to get there kit carb approved. that in itself makes the kit expensive.

Re: Turbo Exhaust

sorry to bring this back, but i thought i'd show you how a tubo exhaust is on a race truck, not a pick-up, a real truck, built for racing.

Unfortunately the greddy kit isn't "legal" on swapped b16s (even if I did take the time & $$to get it b.a.r. approved) or the Del Sol VTECs (I asked about them specifically). Greddy sucks anyways. Just go to a place that either doesn't do a visual (I know several places that'll pass cars with non CARB parts on the car). Or if your car can't even pass the sniffer find a place that you can pay the guy to put another car on. I haven't found one of these places yet but I've heard of several people doing it.
