Completed - Tamiya Honda RA272 (Lots of pictures, 56K warning..!!)
After what seemed like a never ending project, the Honda RA272 is finally completed. This is only the seventh model I’ve built since taking model building back up again, and this is the VERY first 1/20 scale model I’ve undertaken, and is also the first F1 model I’ve ever built. A few firsts there and the firsts didn’t stop there.
The model was intended from the very start to be a practice model, seeing how far I could push my limited but adequate skills. Two months later, and £60 of investment, and the model below is what I’ve managed to accomplish in those eight weeks. The kit is a Tamiya kit, and is already very well detailed. There were a lot of mold lines that needed to be sanded off, and the parts were ALL very fragile. The list of what I’ve done is as follows – Drilled out the Exhaust tips Removed the plastic Air Trumpets Added Acu Stion Metal turned Trumpets Added Acu Stion P/E mechanical detail set Drilled out fuel line holes Added .35 clear fishing line with clear yellow and orange for fuel lines The model was sprayed with TS7 racing white, polished, decaled and then cleared with X22 clear. It was polished and waxed once the clearcoat had gassed out for 3 weeks. Nearly all the metal parts are either P/E or Alclad II metal paints, I used Automotive Satin and Flat blacks for most of the black parts, and detailed as best I could with silver paint nuts, bolts etc… There are few mistakes, and some areas where I could have done better, or detailed better. I haven't started to make my own springs yet.. I felt I’d done enough to this kit, and it was touch and go as to whether I was going to complete this or not. I’m very proud of this model, I feel like I really accomplished something here. I will now thank all the members on this board who helped, you know who you are.. And without anymore delay I present the Honda RA272. Progress thread – http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...5&page=1&pp=15 Many thanks for looking, and leave any comments you feel like, both good and bad..!! Thanks for reading. |

look very nice.
I wish the 1/12 was not diecast. It would have been fun to do

Excellent build!
After all the dramas you've had you must be feeling great to finally have finished, and completed it so well! You've taken some risks in pushing your limits, and succeeded - well done! Looking forward to seeing more. |

Well done on completing such a tremendous replica!
I know what you are talking about in having to say "enough!" with adding details. Otherwise we'd never finish anything...hang on I don't seem to finish anything anyway!

Thank you for the wondeful comments.. I was hoping you'd all like it, as I put a lot of work into this one to make it look just like the real car. What is important is that I learnt a lot of new skills. Using small pin vises, attaching P/E parts etc. The new skills will certainly come in handy in my conquest to build as many detailed models as I can..!!
Looking at my unbuilt collection, and thinking what to do next... Was going to be a Ford Focus 2002 WRC, but ordered PE and CF upgrades for it from grandprixmodels all most the same time as the Honda upgrades, and guess what.. Not arrived yet.. So, I might order some P/E and CF upgrades for the Subaru 2001 WRC I've got my nose hanging over from media mix, or build the 99 WRC I've already got P/E and CF decals.. Ah..!! Too many choices..!! And my next F1 car is perhaps going to be a Ferrari.. Not sure which one yet, fancy the SMS super detail kit for the Ferrari 2000.. What and see.. Again, thanks for the great comments guys... Means a lot... |

Great! I bet those fuel lines must have been a pain... but it all looks brilliant, so much detail. Great, truly great car.

That is insanely badass!! I attempted to do the fuel lines on my RA272, but the thought of it somewhat scared me. Great job on those! I can't wait to see your next project, I cant imagine anything topping that :-D
