I'm assuming that's crank hp...next question...how about the hp with bolt-ons, like a header-back exhaust, still running the same boost? And which is better, the red or the black top?

Re: Question for you SR20 smarties.

red top and black top are practically same motor, black tops are newer SR's (less Km's usually) whp is 160 aprox with stock exhaust, whp with full exhaust and FMIC is around 200whp thats a 7psi, get a manual boost controller (50 bucks) you can run around 13-15psi, and net somewhere around 250whp

Header-back exhaust and a front mount intercooler nets 40 whp, and 6 pound jump in boost nets another 50 whp? You could power another car(read: civic) on the horsepower gained from those mods alone, no wonder SR-20 swaps are so popular

yes. also the red top is generally considered better for hardcore tuning because it doesnt have VVT and something about the way the head is ported or something... but if you are looking to just leave it alone the blacktops are generally newer and lower miles.

Re: Question for you SR20 smarties.

if you want a better performing S13 SR20, go with an S13 blacktop, they arent the same as the S14 which have the VVT.

and yeah, you can cam out the S13's like a mofo compared to the VVT.

Re: Question for you SR20 smarties.

btw when i said the red top and black top are the same...i was talking about the s13 black top...they are the newer s13 SR...so yea black top is the way to go...or get a red top (cheaper) and just rebuild it...doesnt cost a whole lot, and you know everything kosher..

Errr.... not quite

the S13 blacktop gets the 54C internals.

-better pistons
-better rods
-better oil pump
-better head

A few of the later model Redtops have it too... but most of them are 54J internals

The S13 Blacktop head will handle the most power as is. the runners on the S14/S15 motors have to make a sharper corner to fit under the VVT stuff. (refered to as Highport / Lowport)

Id take an S15 motor over an S13 blacktop anyday.

Re: Question for you SR20 smarties.

my buddy with a redtop, is running aftermarket, downpipe, exhaust, front mount i-c, and with a manual boost controller he spikes to 18 psi, but he gets 1.8 60ft times, and has ran 12.9's like 4-5 times i think.
but consecutively 13.3's atleast.

Re: Question for you SR20 smarties.

12's on the stock turbo can be reached. Boost is the key

well the key to a stock T25 running 12's is traction. not boost. at most a stock turbo SR will trap is around 105mph and thats in a lighter S13.

Oh yah well traction is more like an obstacle to overcome, I said boost was key because you won't see 12's on 7 psi but yah you're right on that one.

What are the weight differences between the s13 and s14? I guess I'll go look it up because I'm sure my S13 is lighter in comparison to stock weights.
